I got my first tapestry for Christmas and started it today. I hope you don't mind if I make a little SAL here for it
So far enjoying it very much - but after stitching for 2-3 hours today my hands and wrists are so painful now, especially the right one. I guess it must be a much more pronounced stitching action ? ?
The kit is from Jolly Red and called Tree Of Life. Here's how far I got today:

It is lovely. I hope your hands will get used to the different way of stitching soon.

very pretty. Are there a lot of different stitches also? I love how tapestry (which I think is what we call needlepoint over here?) looks, but have never done any. I had an aunt who did lovely pieces and made them into cushions and chair coverings, I think. I hope that your wrists get used to it and so don't keep hurting you.

What a charming design! And it looks as though it has been painted on well so that it is clear which stitch has to be done in which colour. There are some diagonals, though, how do they work? Are they half stitches? (Is there such a thing as a fractional in tapestry?)

Yes, there are fractionals, or - even better - you can just use a smaller stitch (pettit point is a common one for smaller areas). You can produce extremely 3D works with creative tapestry.
I have only completed intro 1 & 2 and I already have 3 Lever Arch binders full of different stitches for creative tapestry works. There are another 6 extension courses - each with approximately 20 new stitches to learn.
Yes, I've got a lovely book full of tapestry stitches -- but when doing a picture it tends to be done in half crosses or tent stitch, doesn't it? But I hadn't thought that if it's on a double canvas you can use petit point, yes, that must be what the diagonals indicate, thanks!
Mystonique, I'll know where to come to when I need help
As far as I can tell this design just uses ordinary tent stitch (or continental tent stitch I would call it). It's sometimes quite difficult to tell what colour goes where, but I've been stitching whatever colour covers the four threads in the middle of the holes and that seems to be working okay
Carole asked about tapestry and needlepoint. I think they are the same thing - but if not then I don't have a clue if it's a tapestry or needlepoint project I'm doing
But I'm having fun and it's stitching up quite quickly - should have an update photo over the weekend.

I know lots of peopel that stick to continental and produce gorgeous work. I know one lady that solely does petit point on tapestry canvas - again amazing work. Me I like to play around, which is not to say I'm any good at it (I usually get a chart from my tapestry teacher which tells me what stitch where and then I interchange things if I'm not happy with it from there)

Where did you purchase it from?
I actually got it as a Christmas present from my husband
(He thought it was a cross stitch kit )
I think he got it in John Lewis.
Thats wonderful, I have had a look on the website as I dont live near a John Lewis but I couldnt fin them anywhere. I have found some lovely tapestry from these sites, Tapestry gifts, Group on, and Treasureknit.com, now I just have to choose which one I would like for the birthday!
