Really interesting pattern book

Post by Sandycheeks »

I bought a pattern book off of Ebay the other day and it arrived. Called Sloane's Four Season's by John Sloane.
It is has different scenes for each of the seasons. All country settings.
But this is the first book that I have gotten. It has the pattern printed on one page then on the next page is the back stitching, shown. I anxious to see how much easier this makes doing the cross stitch. So much easier to see the lines.
I will have to post some pic later. There are some other codes on the pattern I will have to figure out. Where you have a symbol with a circle around in a space with nothing in the smaller blocks you fill in with that symbols colors I've never seen a pattern done this way. I will diffently have to read the instructions in the front of the book on how to use this one.

New Stitches will sometimes publish the design and backstitching separately. Makes it so much easier when the backstitching is very complex.

I'm afraid if I start one more project I never get any of them done. I am anxious to try it though.

I've seen older charts like that, usually back when the symbols were hand printed. I was looking for an example from my stash & found a Cross-Eyed Cricket shepherdess stocking chart from 1985 that had this kind of coding on it, and I do remember older magazines (maybe Just Cross Stitch?) that did it, too. I can see where it would save a lot of time & effort not having to fill in hundreds of squares with the same symbol! If these are newer charts, maybe it was done just to make them easier to read. Can you tell when your book was published?
