The Great Tapestry of Scotland *Official Photo*

Post by Serinde »

I didn't know anything about this until this morning, when I was listening to Radio 4's Today programme.

The idea is to tell the history of Scotland in stitches in a series of panels, and volunteers are wanted (with workshops to help stitching technique). http://www.scotlandstapestry.com/" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

I just might sign up!! :thinks:

Sounds like the Quaker tapestry, and also I think something called the Peterborough tapestry which was displayed at the K&S Show -- they are both astonishing projects, and this looks to be equally amazing! Wouldn't it be great to be part of it!

Sounds like a great thing to be part of. Do stitchers only provide their time and skill or the threads as well?

Indeed it does. I think the idea came out the of very successful Prestonpans tapestry, on which some of the same designers worked.

Well, I've signed up -- along with a zillion others -- so we'll see what happens next!

Good for you! :applesauce: I think this will be so exciting. Do you have any idea how they will choose the stitchers or when this is so supposed to start?

We visited the Bailiwick Museum in Guernsey a few years ago and the Bailiwick Millennium Tapestry was on display. It represents a hundred years of Guernsey history and was made by parishoners from each of the ten parishes. It is beautiful.
It would be great to be part of stitching the Scottish tapestry. Glad you have signed up Serinde, sounds exciting.

That's the one I saw, thanks! I remember especially they had a restricted palette of colours but the people stitching the panel with Bonnie Prince Charlie (I think?) landing somewhere or other demanded a particularly bright pink for the flowers, which had to be just that shade to be historically and botanically correct :-)
