New Start-Free To Fly *Finished July 17th*

Post by calico »

I wanted to share a story behind this newly started project.
One year ago, on June 21, 2011, I had to say goodbye to my sweet old dog, Kayla :(
She was diagnosed with cancer and we took care of here for 5 weeks longer until she had finally had enough. She was 13.5 years old and I loved to take her on long walks on a beautiful greenbelt near my house. After leaving the vet that sad day, I went on that same walk for the first time without her. As I was walking near the pond, a big yellow Swallowtail butterfly flew up to me, so close to my face I felt I could reach out and touch it. It hovered around me for a few seconds, almost bumping into me. I had such a warm sensation and just knew it was Kayla sending me a sign that she was headed to a better place! I continued to see those butterflies all throughout the summer last year always making me think of Kayla at the Rainbow Bridge! I decided I wanted to find a cross stitch kit to stitch in her memory and I found one called Free To Fly by Janlynn. I ordered it online last year but never started it.
Fast forward one year to June 21, 2012. As I was sitting in my backyard, watching my bird feeder, thinking how it had already been one year without my girl, a BIG yellow Swallowtail butterfly came up to me and at roughly the same time of day as the previous year (I kid you not) that butterfly came up to me, so close to my face and just hovered there, then made a few fluttery circles around me just like the first time!. I still continue to see quite a few of those in my yard, usually fluttering up near the trees or fairly high above me, never close to me. I like to think that Kayla is still with me in some sense and letting me know, by way of Swallowtails that she's waiting for me. Usually, I'm a skeptic when it comes to things like this but I think I've had a change of heart!
So, after my second 'butterfly encounter' I wasted no time and decided that on that day, I would finally start stitching this design...

How wonderful of Kayla to send you such a sweet and pretty 'messenger'.

I've not seen one of these butterflies before but it looks so beautiful and you have made a great start on this lovely tribute to your dear departed canine family/friend :stars: :rainbow: :stars: :stars: :rainbow: :stars: :stars: :rainbow: :stars:

What a touching story. Made me a little teary eyed, tbh. Such a lovely design to give tribute to your departed companion.

 A beautiful heartwarming story. I believe in the rainbow bridge. And I would have the same feelings as you about the butterfly. I think doing this lovely piece will comfort you and be a loving memorial for your special friend.

Sceptical or not you're girl is either at rest and would want you to feel better or she's happy and telling you so  It's beautiful to have her memory in your heart like this either way.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I replaced the 14ct Aida that came with the kit with 18ct Aida just because I like it better :)
I also wanted to mention that I'm certainly no expert on butterflies but from the ones I've photographed and Googled, this one doesn't seem to be an accurate representation of a Swallowtail :thinks:the black veins are all wrong. It looks more like a morph between a Swallowtail and a Monarch so it sort of bugs me that they call it a Swallowtail. I mentioned it to my husband and he  and said "it's a butterfly, who cares what kind it is if it looks good" Anyway, I wish I was artistic enough to change the pattern to resemble the kind of Tiger Swallowtail I see in my yard. Picky, I know :-|

:applesauce: Great job. I think the butterfly is lovely and the symbol is still there even if it isn't the exact butterfly. What is important is what it means to you.

Beautiful work ! :applesauce:

I'm glad you shared it and the story. :)

I'm sorry the depiction isn't exact, but it is still a lovely piece, and so well done ...

Me too! I often think about our last dog, Sophie. She was such a lovely gentle companion...with a cheeky streak!

A fitting tribute to a faithful pet. :rainbow:

I love swallowtail butterflies and we have plenty of them here in France, and that one you put up a link to is seen here as well!

Beautiful story and very nice stitching. I'm glad Kayla is looking out for you.

The wonderful Skitzzz did a chart for me with three photos of my pony Fizz. I have started it but have put it away, even at nearly five years since he's been gone it's still a bit raw. But it's there for when I can do it!

What a sweet story. I am sorry to hear of your loss and I know how you fee,l we just had to let our sweet baby go in February. She too was diagnosed with cancer. It is a hard decision but they do count on us to care for them and make the right decision for their comfort.

You are absolutely right, Carole...thank you!

Wendy, that is a beautiful butterfly you linked to!

Niki, I'm glad you like my close-ups. I love to do them because it really captures the texture of stitching. It can also really show the mistakes and poorly done stitches too, so it can be challenging
