How To Cross Stitch With Perfect Finishings (YouTube video)

This makes me feel super slow... I guess I do more of a "poke and jab" method, bringing my needle down and then back up from behind.

The tail in front! I am no way near skilled enough to be brave enough for that.. I could see loose ends sticking out everywhere for me especially with the coverage she used.

I'll sometimes stitch similarly if there are single stitches attached to a row like she showed (I didn't watch the whole video yet), but I don't leave threads on top. I'd end up with all kinds of crazy fringes all over my piece. I sometimes stab and poke and sometimes use a sewing method. Depends on the fabric count, the chart and how I feel. I like the sewing method because it's faster, but I don't always get the neatness of the stitches, if that makes any sense.

Hmmm - I don't care for finishing the threads underneath the front stitches... To me, I can see which rows she used. It also looks like she's crossing the top legs in different directions...

I think I'll stick with my ways... :)

Phew! I got scared that I'd been doing something wrong all this time! The sewing method does look way faster, but I also think the stab and poke looks much neater.

Yep! I'm sticking to my stab and poke method. I'm too old to be taught new tricks! It looks confusing to me. :?

I went and watched for just a short time. I really don't care to be told how to stitch. I do it for fun and when I start getting told that you HAVE to do it a certain way then I feel restricted and that takes the enjoyment out of it all. I prefer to do what makes me happy. :D

If it is a new stitch then the videos are good to watch but when it is just basic information I prefer the do what method I enjoy.

I started watching it but was confused half way through. I am not sure what the message is since the closed captioning was not very clear. The words used is not what I think the speaker is saying. Since watching the demonstration without accurate closed captioning is very confusing for me. Also I noticed that the legs is done differently so I am not sure if all the legs ended up in the same direction. Interesting video but confusing for me.

I like what Rose said, but I also do not like my ends on the front, I think they belong on the back. I also did not like that she was not consistent with which part was on top, they did not cross all the same way. But this is all just my opinion :) I have stitched using both the stab method and the "needle stays on top" method (don't know what it's really called lol).

I definitely didn't watch it the whole way through, the top stitches go in different directions. Not a good video for the learner to watch.

I missed the part where the crosses were in different directions . I need to pay more attention when I watch these things.

Nope, I stick with the stab method. Attempting the sewing method really slowed me down and it messes with the neatness of the stitches (imo). In my experience, if you use the sewing method and :anotherfrog: and the piece has a lot of empty holes, you wind up with stretched out holes much more frequently than with the stab method. I guess if you wash your piece when it's done, it's not so much of an issue, but I often don't wash when I'm done because the project was small and I kept my hands clean while stitching.

As for the video, I'm not fond of the idea of finishing my stitches on the top, I feel like it would be pretty noticeable if you're working with 2 strands. It might not be so bad with 3, but honestly, I'd just rather not when I can hide them on the back without worry.

My tapestry teacher would have my eyes out if I tried stitching that way.

She'd say finishing on the front will leave signs to the trained eye - no matter what and sewing through is also fine when you aren't concerned about the nap of your thread or pulling the fabric but it's much cleaner and friendlier to the thread and fabric if you stab and pull. If you are bothering with creating a beautiful project WHY oh WHY would you do it so as to do damage along the way - stitch in a manner that preserves the fabric and thread so it looks perfect.

It a very practical method of sewing though - and if you were sewing clothes a lot just for every day wear it wouldn't be sensible to do it any other way.

I feel the same way as all of you! As some of you may know, I learned to stitch from a YouTube video. Thank goodness it wasn't that one, I don't think I'd have gotten very far at all.

I have seen people finish at the front of the work and it was all but invisible, but I still think on close inspection it would have shown, unless you are going for really full coverage (say 4 strands on 14ct).

Very occasionally I've used the sewing method but I don't like it for two reasons: one is that it plays havoc with my tension and the second is that I like my fabric drum-tight in its hoop or frame which makes the sewin method practically impossible anyway :-)!

Ermmm no!!!!!! I'm with the rest of you, I stab and pull! I definitely couldn't get my head round having the ends on the front anyway - there's a back and a front to a piece of work for a reason

I have used the sewing method on occasion, but usually only when I'm working on a low count such as 14ct or when I'm working on something like a bib at the bottom where it is hard to stab and pull with the fabric of the bib in the way. I find it simply impossible to use the sewing method when doing something like 25ct or 28ct over 1 and that's even though I sew in hand so have fabric flexibility.

Yes I did think she had got things rather, uhm, back to front :-) -- "keep your back super neat ... by having all the ends at the front"
