Confetti stitches - beginning or end?

Post by annamarie23 »

I've reached a part of my Egyptian project where there seems to be a lot of confetti stitches. In the past I think I've just worked the stitches as Ive come to them on my chart.

I'd be interested to hear how everyone deals with these stitches. Do you tend to work the confetti stitches before you start the larger blocks of colour or do you stitch the confetti stitches at the end when you have already stitched the larger colour sections? Does that make sense? Does it make much difference? :thinks:

Sorry if this question has been asked in the past. Thank you in advance for your help.

I guess we all have our own way, I never think of confetti stitches as such, they are just another stitch to be done as I come to them and everyone is done as I come to it because I park my threads.

I really don't know or seen confetti stitches, unless you call those different colors in a pattern, like a wolf, confetti stitches. I had just finished 2 10 x 13 mother wolf/cubs scene for my B/H and a x-co-workers son for last Christmas. If that is the case, I just stitch as usual. It doesn't bother me to change threads, as I stitch in a circular motion.

I prefer to do the confetti stitches first and then the blocks of color. Usually. Sometimes it is easier to do the block of color and fill in the odd stitch or two. I guess it depends on the way its charted, but more probably on my mood :? I know if I'm tired ,larger blocks are better or if I'm watching something that needs a little bit more concentration (or listening to a book that needs a bit more attention). I think this is another perfect example of how there really isn't a right or wrong way or a better way. It comes down to what works best for you.

I don't really have a rhyme or reason for the order in which I do the confetti stitches. In some projects I do it first so the threads can be covered, sometimes I fill it after so it's easier to count to them, and sometimes, I just stitch as I go, either if I am parking or working in rows.

I guess it depends mainly on whether the whole fabric is covered in stitches (like in a HAED) or if there'll be fabric showing in the area.

I usually do the big sections of color first and fill in later. No particular reason why, that's just how it developed. Maybe it's motivational? It's nice to see big chunks of a new project get finished right up front.

I do blocks first (or semi-blocks depending on how bad the confetti is) and fill in the single stitches at the end of the section I'm working on. That way I have anchor points for all the single stitches.

For those who do the single stitches first and blocks last, how do you fasten on and off for the single stitches, especially when stitching 1 over 1? Do you just leave long tails at each end of the stitch and rely on the blocks to catch them? I'd be worried about ending up with knots on the back if I tried this though?

Waste knots are useful for both starting and finishing threads in that situation: http://www.better-cross-stitch-patterns ... -knot.html" target="_blank" target="_blank.

I use them at the bottom of my columns but without the knots (I call it a 'waste tail' - shorter than 'waste knot without the knot').
