Aida holding frame

Post by trixi884 »

Hey all,

Random question here.. I am about to start a large project ( 20 x 16" ), but it is square and I don't have a hoop/frame big enough to hold it to work on.. Nor have I got around to buying one yet as low on money. I collect threads / aida slowly for my projects :)

I am wondering if anyone has a " At home " idea type remedies that they use to hold aida while working on it ?

Many thanks :)

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

You don't necessarily need a frame that's going to hold the entire piece of fabric while you work on it. Lots of us move hoops and the like around a piece while we're stitching. If you wrap the hoop in bias tape, not only will it hold the fabric more securely, it will also help to protect the stitches. And, naturally, you take the hoop off the work when you are done stitching for the day! The biggest thing I've ever worked on (a metre square) was done this way.

 Hello and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! As Serinde said, I stitch large projects and prefer generally smaller hoops or Q-snaps, even when using a stand. I move the hoop or Q-snap around and  don't always take it off between stitching sessions, though it is probably the right thing to do. What is the large project you are planning on?

Oh wow, I guess I could do that, even though my hoop is only about 4inches wide from a previous project lol :) But wont using the hoop like that leave indentations of rings all over the pattern?

P.s never heard of Bias tape before :p

The hoop will leave a ring pressed in the fabric, but that can be ironed out once you are done. Most pieces need to be ironed once done anyway, regardless of hoop placement.

Any indentations will wash out when you are finished with the piece. I find they disappear over time as I'm working on the piece. Any threads that seem crushed will "pop up" also. There are larger hoops available at all different prices, but generally they are not very expensive. If there is a craft store near you, that is something to consider eventually if you are going to be stitching larger projects.

Hey, the project I am working on is a custom thing I have made for my partner :) He has 3 children, ( And our first together due in 6 days ). Hes also a rastafarian, so making him this with his children's names etc :) His 4th child's name will fit at the bottom with date etc once born

I have the chart all ready from STOIK stitch creator :) But going to have to print out sep peices at a time to work on as the chart comes out all funny when i print it from the creator itself :( ( Also had to remove a ton of colours from the chart, only 4 colours on this but anti aliasing turned the chart into 32 :P so took a fair bit or editing my end lol )

That is a great chart and a wonderful gift. Congratulations on your upcoming event :stork:. If I have a chart with a lot of pages I only print a few at a time, usually the one I'm working on and the pages surrounding it. I hope you will post pictures for us as you work on this. The colors are brilliant.

Thank you :) I will def post pictures. I should be receiving the threads next week so will prob start it then. And it may take me some time to do but will keep you updated :)

I love cross stitch, I used to do little bits and pieces and think about starting to collect threads for times like this.. But never got around to it and ended up putting it all down lol. I did a 4 leaf clover keyring last year ( proper fill with fluff type not stick in plastic case ones ) and my poor fingers after that lol! Once I get started on a project I enjoy it so much I can't put it down till my fingers hurt.. So dreading what it will be like on this one haha

When I use a hoop I always use a fairly small one - even on BAPs. I've never had a problem with marks on the fabric or stitching (just remember to take the hoop off when you aren't stitching).

Otherwise, if you are at all handy, you can usually make longer rods for wider projects for scroll frames quite easily. So you really just need one good set of side bars and you can make long bars as long as you want them.

Thank you for the hoop tip, I really don't like using the frame I have as it doesn't hold the fabric snug enough for my liking!
