Doing a pattern without a color chart

Would you dare? I have a bunch of patterns cut out from magazines but with no color chart. I can guess the colors, but chances are I'll be off. These patterns have shading so I don't want to mess with that, knowing the end product might be awful. Is there some kind of 'color chooser' web tool that lets you select a color in a photo and give you a DMC equivalent? It seems pretty useful, if that exists. I am dying to make these pictures, but I don't know if it'll look awful. Any thoughts?

I rely on this (and the one with actual floss samples) whenever I want to change colors in a design.

I actually do have one with actual threads! So it really helps? I'll have to try it out I'm worried because a lot of the shades are super similar, and I know that sort of thing matters when it comes to shading. I guess if I find a similar color and stay in the grouping (of cool, warm, etc.) it should be fine.

It has the entire line of DMC organized by family so if you're doing shading, you can pick colors that are in the same family.


There area number of RGB to DMC converters too - here's the first one from the search I did.

I think between the chart and the converters, I would probably be willing to give it a try if I had a very clear photo of the finished piece. Just remember to sample the color at a few different places, and possibly even use a couple of different converters to see if you're getting a consistent color conversion. If the piece were one where color matching was important, I might even stitch samples of the colors I chose to make sure that when stitched they really do form a smooth transition.

I've ended up with this before too ... they got cut out of magazines but the instructions and colour keys were left out as it was imagined by a non cross stitcher that these weren't required by an experienced stitcher.

If she cut the patterns out of a magazine, neglected to also cut out the color charts and then threw the magazine away, no copyrights are violated.

Like others mentioned, I did cut it out of a magazine and forgot to cut out the chart, and then I threw the magazine away. Stupid me! I need to be more careful next time!

I also just wanted to thank everyone and say that I started on my third ever project and I guessed the color chart-- so far it's coming out REALLY good! I'm super excited to see how it will turn out.
