Center line (H & V) marking on patterns

Post by Russophile »

(Yay, this should be the 10th post that lets me into the gallery!)

I've seen some patterns where the center line is marked by an arrow right on a line (i.e. where the needle holes are, and others where the arrow marks the spaces/stitch lines. Do you adopt your own personal rule of thumb regarding how to interpret this, when doing your preliminary gridding?

I grid with water soluble pen and have never been able to only grid the "holes" so my gridding tends to be the first row and then every 10 rows after that with the first row (for eg rows 1,11,21 etc). If you look at a close up of this photo of my last of Shiver Meow Timbersupdate.
Image I think you can get an idea of what I mean. I gave up trying to draw the line on the holes as it took more time for me. I always start in the upper left corner and grid one page at a time with a little more to the right and beneath the page for any stitches that I continue. I hope this is clear. If you mean just deciding on where the actual center of the fabric is because you will be starting there, I think it is really up to you as to what you prefer. I don't think it will make any difference whether you follow the arrows on the needle holes or the stitch spaces.

Someone else can probably explain this better.

I use a program I wrote to make my charts, which is why it works my way. The centreline, as far as I'm concerned, is along the holes.

Whether the arrows are on the hole line or the stitch line depends on whether the design has an even or odd number of stitches for that dimension. If it's an even number, the arrow will be on the hole line; for an odd number, it'll be on a stitch line. For example, if the design is 75 stitches wide and 50 stitches tall, the arrows will be on the hole line between the 25th and 26th row for horizontal center and on the 38th column stitch line for vertical center. At least that's been my experience. :) I don't grid my fabric, so I can't help you interpret how to translate that in your gridding but my feeling is that I'd lean toward the holes as Richard said, but Carole makes a good point. I think whatever you decide works for you, stick with it.

Thanks, all! :applesauce: It's rather a silly question, I realize; we're talking at most a couple of millimeters either direction!
