HAED Princess and the Pea

Post by adellar »

Morning all.

Wondering if you could give some advice!

I'm planning on doing The Princess and Pea from Heaven and Earth designs. But instead of doing it in 22ct I'm going to do it on 14 ct Magic aida (for ease) as I want it to be as long as I can get it to fit the wall. The idea being the princess at the top of the room and the pea at the bottom (but more like the size of a brussell on 14 ct!)

Anyway, I digress, do you think I should use 3 strands of floss or two. I just want really good coverage.

And if any one has tips/hints on how to do this or if they've done something similar, I'd love to hear from you

Many thanks

Annie

I think it may be dependant on the background you use.
Until June last year I only ever used 14ct Aida, and 2 strands. In areas where there was a huge contrast between the fabric colour and the thread colour it did seem to show through, and it would have been better to use 3 strands. Where the colours were closer to each other, it seems to have made less of a difference.

Looking at the image, you could well be right in thinking in the gold areas and skin areas that it will need three strands to be absolutely perfect. But it will be much more difficult to stitch due to the number of threads in each hole. You may well need to try it with 3 strands first & decide if it's too tight for you to be comfortable with.

Regards,

Richard

I have that chart and haven't gotten near to starting it. I love the colors and it looks like so much fun. Test your stitches before you start. 3 strands may be fine when you have blocks of colors to stitch, but when you get into areas with a lot of confetti it may be really difficult going. For a project this big, it is worth the extra time to be sure before you start. Believe me since I had to restart an HAED after completing 6 pages because of too much difficulty stitching the confetti. I would stitch at least several blocks with solid colors and then several with confetti. Maybe find a section of the chart that will give you both. I would think at least a 30 x 30 square to get a good idea. This is going to be an awesome project and I can't wait to see you getting started!

I agree with the others that you might want to do a test on a swatch before you dive in. Two strands won't give you the coverage you want. On 14ct you can use three or even four strands for the best coverage. In this case, I might also use a #24 needle to 'open' the holes since there's going to be quite a few strands in them when all the stitches are in. If you use a #26 needle, I'm afraid the floss will abrade quickly if the smaller needle doesn't open the holes enough to accommodate the bulk of three or four strands.

Thank you all

In the words of Baldrick, I have a cunning plan....

I've bought a mini from HAED. Actually, I bought 3!

I'm going to stitch one as a practice to make sure it's right before I start this epic adventure

Just got to choose which one....

I love them all. Think my favourite is the wizard. But I think the storekeep/butterfly mask designs are the kind that will help prepare for Princess and the Pea. I actually want to do them all. :)

Any ideas/suggestions gratefully received!

I'm just pleased I got 3 more patterns. Adds to the ever growing to do list!!!

Well. I've chosen. It'll be the Storykeep Butterflies Galore.

Hubby liked that one the most. I was erring towards it. So that was the clincher. And I needed someone to make the choice. I was finding it too hard!
