Hand dyed floss

Post by richelderfer78 »

i like the hand dyed flosses, but can't afford them and I'm getting very frustrated trying to figure out which DMC colors to use instead. Any suggestion for converting classic color works?

This is a problem, and I'm not entirely sure there's an answer. Obviously, there's no straight substitution between DMC and any hand-dyed thread. I suppose you could put together a blend between two colours that might suggest the hand-dyed one, but it won't ever be quite like the original.

Many designers use basic DMC and then highlight special areas with hand-dyed threads. These are more expensive than run-of-the-mill DMC, but worth the cost for that really special project.

Instead of hand dyed floss DMC and Anchor do make variegated threads at a reasonable price...just a matter of getting a shade card and choosing some colours to suit.

Good Luck :shamrock:

Thanks for the suggestions . . . I'm working through it, but wish all designers would provide DMC substitutions. I know it doesn't look the same, but some of us aren't good at making the substitutions on our own. Oh, well..................

Do you have an LNS that is close to you????? Not a Michael's or Joann's but a small shop that you could go into and they could help you with the conversions. My LNS lady is wonderful with helping to make subs. Or maybe just another stitcher you could get together with and bounce suggestions off each other. We do that a lot at our meetings. We don't always agree but at least we can make suggestions.

There are no needlework shops within fifty miles . . . . I'll figure it out - it's just frustrating!

Thanks for the link - I have seen this one, but I do realize that hand-dyed and DMC will never match. Thanks again.
