Watch Me Stitch

Post by Jiinxx »

Hello fellow cross stitchers!

I've never joined a forum like this before, and I rarely even join forums. But I've gotten into cross stitch over the past year and I'm really into it lately. My mom used to stitch some when I was small, and she picked up a kit for me when I was around seven or so from Michael's, but I never got the hang of it and dropped it. I still remember the cute little green frog - actually, they still sell the same kit today!

A year ago in July, I wanted to pick up knitting (my mom also knitted some - but what didn't she do?) and I was browsing a lot of sites on how to self-teach. I was talking to my coworker about it, wishing I knew someone who knitted, and she told me she cross stitched. Cross stitch I said? Isn't that where you make little 'x's with thread? Yes! I suddenly LOVED cross stitching and wanted to try that instead of knitting. I search on tips and techniques for self-teaching. That same night I went to Michael's and bought a kit.

The kit was of two wolves and it took me two months to finish. I loved doing it, and took pictures every time I picked it up. However, I missed a row and didn't find out until I was almost finished. I'm pretty sure only I could tell, but then another problem came up - I ran out of color for one of the wolf's leg. I thought I'd be smart and substitute a spare. Needless to say I didn't like the result. I knew nothing about floss conversion, but as I was lamenting about my cross stitching woes to my fellow cross stitching coworker, she told me I could look online for thread conversions, and not have to order thread through the kit company (there was a note that said if you ran out of thread order from x). Well, all this research lead to more research. . . on different patterns. Thus my insanity began.

I must have bought 20 patterns and various kits within 24 hours. I hadn't even finished my first cross stitch yet! What was I doing?! It was okay though, I reminded myself, because out of all the blogs and youtube videos I browsed through, EVERYONE had a 'stash' and multiple cross stitch projects that they 'rotated'. So I bought MORE. I subscribed to three cross stitch magazines, even one from overseas (The UK has all the good stuff). $80 for 12 issues? Pah. It's cross stitch related - it's worth it! I started scoring Barnes and Noble for the UK cross stitch magazine, as a blogger mentioned they sell them there.

During this buying frenzy, I had finished my wolves! Or so I thought. There was a thing called 'back-stitching' left to do. Doesn't sound too hard, right? Wrong. I tried and failed and got SO frustrated I ripped all the back-stitching I attempted out. I went to the internet again to see if anyone had such troubles and frustration as I did, or if I was just failing horribly and this cross stitch thing wasn't for me. I then learned the term 'frogging'. It means ripping out the threads, which I did. It was called frogging because frogs make the 'rip. rip. rip.' sound. Made perfect sense. I laughed in my head. I loved this newly found community.

I looked at my sad wolves with no back-stitching and frayed edges of fabric and just decided I COULDN'T with it anymore. At least not right now. Why? Because I found an amazing pattern with JUST whole stitches. WHOLE STITCHES! The entire thing. No reason to learn back-stitching now! I already had the pattern, fabric, and thread. I could start immediately! I could think about my wolves another day, as I taught myself more and made my stitches better. I decided I'd try to finish it into a pillow.

That was September 2014. Now, it's July 2015. I picked up a pattern with 25 pages as my very second project. Was I insane? As I approach the year anniversary I started this project and find myself on only page 13, I begin to think so.

 Hello and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! Loved your introduction and admire your moving to a big project early on. My second project included fractionals, back stitching and blended threads, so I do appreciate your taking on a big challenge early in your stitching career. I think it made me love stitching even more. Great progress on your current project. I hope you will give us lots of updates!!

Welcome aboard! Your WiP is awesome. :applesauce:

I remember the rush of that initial buying frenzy when all you see is new to you and you gotta have it. Hopefully that will wane a bit as the high wears off. Last year I gave away the large bulk of my stash because my tastes had changed over the years, charts that I had to have back then no longer interested me, and it ended up being dead weight taking up storage space. (I'm one of the few that has regrets about unbridled stash buying.)

The project I'm working on now has been in progress 18 months, so I understand what you're saying about long-haul projects. I don't do a rotation, so all my stitching time goes into one project at a time. Posting my progress in the SAL folder keeps me on course and the support from the awesome folks here gives me plenty of motivation. I am glad to see you tackled a big project early on, and I look forward to your updates on it. :)

 Hi Jiinxx and Welcome from me too. What a wonderful introduction and I can understand your frustration with the back stitch, it can be a right royal pain in the - - - - - can't it. I am sure that eventually you will get the hang of it and finish your lovely wolf design.

 you current WIP and you and you stitching it beautifully. Looking forward to the next update. :D

Hello & welcome, hope you enjoy being on here. What a brave choice you made for your second project but it is a wonderful piece. Stitched so beautifully & so many colours. :applesauce: :applesauce: As you rightly say the majority of us have made impulse purchases & have stashes of cross stitching related bits & pieces. Always something there for us to do another day so we don't get bored

Look forward to seeing your update & also whatever else you make. Thanks for sharing your photos with us :D

Welcome to this forum.

What fun you've had... I think you have made an amazing start, particularly on your second picture. My first project was a kit, 300 x 250 stitches & it took me just under a year. Still pleased with it, though I'm having a fair bit of fun with my current (seventh) project, which is an order of magnitude more difficult in terms of colours, complexity & stitch size.
I go for a single projects and chunter through them until the end. Motivation is helped by a two weekly update here and a little natter. I just hope we can help keep you going when your initial adrenalin rush slows.

Regards,

Richard.

It's great to see your progress and hear your story. You're doing beautiful work. I'm not nearly that ambitious with my CCS.

There's so much information on the internet and new learning experiences. You could even learn to knit! I did. I find a small knitting project is much more portable than CCS ... in the car ... in waiting rooms ... at meetings ... etc.

That's what it's all about.I saw my first counted cross stitch in Copenhagen at the Clara Waever shop.It was love at first sight. After returning to Australia I mail ordered ome kits including an alphabet which measures about the size of a small table cloth.Getting married and planning a family I thought it would be a fun thing to stitch for my first child.
I discovered charts, kits, then as time went on overdyed floss hand dyed fabric and yet more charts
My collection of kitted ups would put most to shame.I have enough flosses to start a shop and don't even speak about hand dyed fabric..
My alphabet has A B C and part of J done...well,it is really big with very detailed animals and birds.DS is 40 this year!!!!
Insanity?I call it being happy.

Certainly many, if not all of us can empathise with your story!!! I remember the obscession I felt when I first did a tiny mouseloft stitch and then didnt have anything else to stitch after it and it was a bank holiday.....

My first BAP was also huge and very confetti Laiden, to be honest even now, years later it's still difficult and is a bit of a UFO as. A result.

Youve got miles to hom n your cross stitch journey, it will be lovely to travel it with you, this forum has been my conmfort, my guide and my friend for many years.

Look forward to more progress pics :)

Wow! What a welcome :) Thank you all for your kind words. I have another little progress pic below - finished another page and some stitching progress on page 14 done. This doesn't include Monday night's stitching session - didn't remember to take a pic before bed.

In response to some of your comments, I don't rotate, either! I think it would drive me insane (more so than I already am). I feel like doing a rotation takes away from time you could use to finish one project completely. But then again, I don't know much, do I? This is only my second project ;)

I don't knit, but I used to take this project to work. . . Until it got so big :) Now I'm worried it will get dirty in transport even though I have a lovely bag to haul it around in. I AM thinking a lot lately of teaching myself how to make amigurumi. I don't know how to crochet, but my Nana taught me the basics oh, some 12 years ago. Hopefully it's like riding a bike.

Also, what's a BAP?

Pic below!

:applesauce: :applesauce: That is a lovely update and this looks like a project that must be a lot of fun to stitch! Quite a few members work on only one project at a time. I did that for many many years (until I joined the forum). Then sort of went nuts as you can tell by my list of WIPs,
most of which are BAPs. And yes we have a lot of abbreviations and slang and terms that we use and that we often forget aren't part of everyday language. A BAP is a Big A**Project (I am using the ** because my mother would not have approved of my typing the full word), generally referring to larger and more complex designs. I don't know if there are any specifics, and it may vary a bit from person to person as to what would qualify. My feeling is if you feel it is a BAP then it is. We have a Glossary of Termswhich has a lot of information, not just about slang terms but also about threads, fabrics and general cross stitch terminology. I refer back to it often. Sorry such a long answer to a short question.

Ahh! After I posted, I was thinking BAP might just stand for big a** project ;) I like this term. Very helpful (and hilarious) cross stitch dictionary! I've learned a lot today

From my last post to this morning's that was a solid week of stitching. I was able to get a page complete (with a few extra stitches in the next) because I literally stitched 8 + hours Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. And now I'm paying for it P: Since I'm stitching at the bottom, the way I have to hold my q-snap is kind of funky. My left wrist is killing me. I'm debating getting a 17 x 17 snap when I have to move to the left side of the project so I don't crush my stitches under the clamp, and just turning it into a 17 x 11. Not sure if this will help in any way (other than to ease my mind from potential stitch crushing-ness). Trying to convince the fiance to let me buy a Mark 2 stand ;)

After all, I need it for my epic six generation pokemon stitch!! I was going to work on Hocus Pocus from Tilton Crafts after this, but the pokemon stitch is sooooo tempting (from spritestitch). I'll be attempting it on 28 count lugana (never stitched on linen!) because that seems to be the largest size count that will fit all on one piece of fabric. The total design is 35 x 42 on 28ct (with 3 inch border) and it seems all fabric sizes only go up to 36 inches wide. I wanted to do it on 22 count aida, but alas.

If anyone has any ideas where I can get a large enough piece of fabric in 22 count aida for this, I'll need a 43 x 52 piece!!!!

Very cool! You sound like my SIL. She did a very small piece as her first and then her second piece is an Epic Pokemon stitch that is 20 pages or so. Glad you found the hobby, it's the best!

Some of the online suppliers will special order certain fabrics. Since you are in the US, I would try 123Stitch first, Nordic Needleor Herrschners. I''m sure there are others also, but those are the ones I usually go to first. I expect the size you are talking about will probably be on the expensive side. Personally, I love stitching on 28ct lugana. Can't wait to see your updates on this one.

Keep looking; other manufacturers have wider fabric. You can get fabric in full widths (43/44" and over) by the yard. I know Nordic Needle sells Zweigart in 43-inch wide 22 ct hardanger -- which is 22 ct aida -- by the inch. Go here: http://www.nordicneedle.com/prod/1008-101.html" target="_blank and enter how many inches long (52) you want the piece. It's on sale and you can get the whole hunk for $37.00. Nordic needle is generally a little more expensive than other places, but they have full-width fabric by the yard and the customer service is excellent. If they don't have something you want, they're more than happy to get it for you.
