Baptism Cakes

It all depends on the cake. Most of these didn't take that long. The baby one with the blanket took the longest because of doing a basketweave (fake) technique to make it look woven. If you don't include baking/cooling/icing, it usually takes about an hour or so to do the decorating if my kids don't interrupt too much.sammy_v wrote:Is it really hard work to do cake decorating????
Sorry, no. I only had 2 days notice on this cake, I think. It would have made it a little easier, but I just didn't have time.~threadbear~ wrote:Is the baby face made of chocolate by any chance?
It just takes a lot of practice. The important thing is to have fun with it! Don't expect to be good at all of it. My mom enjoys the baking and icing part--she is a lot quicker with icing a cake and smoothing it (with paper towels) than I am. On the other hand, I am the flower person, idea person, and writing person. I can usually come up with several ideas pretty quickly. For instance, on the baby blanket one, I was in a rush and didn't want to draw on the baby's mouth since I'd have to make another color. So, I took a LifeSaver candy with a Pez candy trimmed down to fit into the lifesaver hole to make the paci.CarolinaGirl wrote:Wow, what a good job! I would love to be able to do something like that! Someone got me a cake decorating tool kit for Christmas last year-I've tried a few things. But I still need a lot of practice and ideas!
Where did you learn to do this so well? CarolinaGirl
I watch them, too, but don't do cakes like that. My mom and I really don't like dealing with rolled fondant. It's a major pain at times and doesn't taste very good. If we have to use it, we use a recipe for rolled buttercream. Plus, I NEVER stack a cake before delivery. That's just nuts!! Wilton is a 3 part series (3 courses for 4 weeks, one night/week) usually. We took 1 & 2. Course 3 is tiered cakes and more speciality things. It's a lot of fun, and my mom's coworkers liked it because she took her practice cake into work each week. We didn't need a cake a week around the house.CarolinaGirl wrote:I know that the craft store in town offers a Wilton Cake decorating class, I have been wanting to take it but I really didn't want to take it by myself......but I guess I will have to if I want to learn! I think the Wilton is a 3 part series.
I love to watch FoodTV when they show the cake challenges! Those people are so talented!
