I am not sure what you mean by wrong---but I know a lot of stitchers, myself included have had to relearn a few things along the way. No worry, you can always continue to stitch---just relearn a few things and you will love the results!! Don't give up---there are a LOT of forum members who are more than happy to offer you suggestions to help you :)

wrong? the stitches all cross in the same direction (1/4 stitches excluded) is about the only "rule". cross stitch is art, and art can't be done wrong :D

I agree. And I'm sure there are even patterns somewhere that have the stitches crossing in different directions. The only other rule I can think of is "Have fun". You cannot be arrested for breaking any non existant rules.

And welcome to the forum!

Oh my gosh! Please don't feel bad. There are very few 'rules' and any that do exist have exceptions. How do you feel what you've been doing is 'wrong?'

We've all learned better ways of doing things as our skills progressed. Think of this as a progression of your skills. That's a good thing, not a bad thing. :)

Don't let any "wrongness" bother you. The only "rule" is that the top leg of each x should go in the same direction, but if you haven't been doing that, no worries. Consider it a lesson learned and just soldier on.

Lots of people use cross stitch to help them deal with their depression and other issues, so even if you think you've been doing it "wrong" just remember the benefits you've received from each little x.

I'm not new funnily enough I've been a member for 5 years today just getting back into stitching. Been trying to do it the correct way today it's so hard! To try keep all the crosses the same. Each to there own I don't think anyone is gonna come round with a magnifying glass to.check.my work out. But was I bit gutted when I realised I was taught incorrectly! That's all!!

So I'm on a mission to correct myself!

Welcome back Sam and I am delighted that you are going to continue to stitch. It takes a little while to get the easiest way to stitch with the top row going the same way but I am sure it will come to you in time. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your work

In my opinion, the last four words of your sentence above are the most important! If it looks fine to you (and I am sure it looks fine to most people who will look at it) then it is fine!

Luckily there are some things in life where right and wrong don't really enter in, and I think cross-stitching is one of those times.

Continue to enjoy!

Hello Sam, welcome back. As fro doing stitches 'wrong' - well we all have our own way of working. I believe someone not long ago said they liked doing the crosses on way one a row & the other way on the next row, gave it a nice texture to her way of thinking. That is it, as others have said, as it is art. Well yours will be original & unique ot you, also a learning curve.

Cross stitch & other crafts are a good way to alleviate depression & ease stresses & strains of every life so please don't beat yourself up about it. You do it your way. Some do 'confetti' (single stitches of one colour amid another colour) last while I do my on off stitches as I go along. I tried the other way but doesn't sit well with me with me & I felt uncomfortable so do them as I go along. Also if I occasionally put a stitch in the wrong place I do not worry about it if it does not affect the overall picture. When I was young I always strived to get every single thing right & would sit ages undoing things whether knitting or needlecraft. Now I am not so concerned about that unless it does stand out like a sore thumb. Consider your project as your contribution to the arts & crafts movement :D Look forward to seeing your work on here too :D

I've always thought one of the best things about cross stitch is how forgiving it is. It's actually really hard to destroy a design - you can either unpick stitches or just modify it a bit so noone (but you) notices! All you really lose is time.
That's definitely not the case with most other crafty mediums!
