enlarging color patterns

Post by fritzmom »

Hi All

New to this forum and hope you can help out.

I need to enlarge the color patterns from my cross-stitch magazines due to not great eyesight any longer. I believe I can make a working photocopy for myself which is just what I need. I've been trying to scan and copy on my printer, but when I enlarge, the pattern becomes too blurry to read properly. Any suggestions on what 'settings' I should be using.

I hope someone can help me with this since I've got great patterns that I want to do, but now that I'm home and have the time :D , I don't have the money to spend to get it professionaly enlarged at a copy store.

Thanks in advance for any and all help. Look forward to talking and sharing with all of you.

I usually have to make an enlarged copy so I can see it. Here's what I do:
a)scan the chart
b) save it into Picasa. This is a google program that I find easy to work with.
c) using Picasa I crop and enlarge until I get an image that I'm happy with. It can take several tries.
d) print each page before using 'undo crop' and cropping again to get the next section. You could just scan the chart in quarters or half instead of cropping so much.

I did a full page chart from a magazine and finished with four A4 pages to work from.

As I said, this is what I do and what program I use. I sometimes use others, but prefer this one. Also, I don't use colour because I'm not bothered about it.

If this doesn't make sense, please let me know.

What I do if I need to enlarge something is to scan it at a higher resolution. If you scan at 600dpi (dots per inch) and then print at 300dpi, it'll be twice as wide and twice as high. If you print at 200dpi (which should still give you a perfectly legible chart) it'll be three times as high and wide.
