Advice on using variegated thread, please

Post by esseff »

Hello, some adviced needed, please :D

I've ordered this chart
http://www.thread-bear.co.uk/product/17 ... ler_In_Red" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank
which I thought I may stitch in DMC colour variations thread. My question is, do I need to stitch with this thread one cross at a time for best effect, or can I stitch it as normal, ie \\\\\\, then /////? Advice would be much appreciated, thank you :D

I stitched my first and ,so far only Biscornu, using DMC variegated thread, it was lovely to see the subtle changes in the shades as I stitched with it. There is a picture in My Webshots .. Exchanges album, pic no.5
Looking forward to seeing your stitching using the variegated thread :P

Lesley, that's really lovely. You're right, the colour changes are really subtle. Did you complete each cross as you went along?

Hi, I had never used variegated thread before and did not think about how to use it either. I am stitching a Piglet design that was recently in Cross Stitch Crazy. I used DMC 4090 (i think) and just stitched normally ///// then \\\\\\\. Now I have looked at the result and this forum I shall in the future work one stitch at a time. Because the colour I used had shades of pinks and oranges in it there are parts where it is pink underneath (////) then orange on top (\\\\)and it does look rather strange. There is one more part on the design where I need to use DMC 4040 so I shall make sure that I do it one stitch at a time and see what effect I get from it.
You were right to ask about it on here, I didnt think twice about plunging straight in!

I recently used variegated thread for the first time and used both methods (stitching in lines and single stitches). You can see the results here:

http://www.crossstitchforum.com/viewtop ... &start=480" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

The leaves show the effect best: those that have backstitch around them were stitched in lines, the leaves without backstitch were stitched as single cross stitches (usually on a diagonal ie one stitch in one row, then I'd jump down a row and do a stitch there)

I can see what effect that has given your piece as the leaves are on an angle so it looks like the pattern is the same on the leaves. I do not think I would have noticed how you had done it had you not pointed it out! It is really good. Was that your own choice to do it that way or is that the suggested way because it works really well.

The design was picked as it would lend itself to trialling different ways of stitching with variegated thread. I wanted to see the difference between stitching ////, \\\\ and doing single stitches / \, / \. The diagonal effect suiting the diagonal leaves was purely accidental - it was the easiest path to stitch the design using single stitches.

Thankyou :D Yes I did, I had read somewhere that it was the best way to stitch with variegated threads and I was pleased with the result.
