Agi's Hungarian folk pattern - updated 08/05/2010

I have started to do a piece from a Hungarian book of folk patterns. Originally it is red and black, as most of Hungarian patterns, but I am doing it for a friend's mum, and she likes maroon and browns so I changed the colours.
I am using 16 count rustico Aida, variegated DMC 4130, and two shades of brown. There is quite a big part, between the rombuses that has to be filled in almost totally, assissi-style. I am still contemplating whether to leave it empty, fill it in with DMC 4130, or chose another colour, and if yes, what.
Ideas welcome. I may do some trials with different colours...

I like traditional patterns too! I would just stay within the shades you've chosen as it could take a way the clean lines of the pattern.

Lovely stitching Agi, and I love the design. I agree with Wendy on this one, keeping to the same variegated colour will keep the traditional look, and because it is variegated floss, it won't be solid looking..if you know what I mean.

lovely shades, they work very well with the pattern! Like Midge, I really like them as they are. Is the filling in rally necessary?

Looks interesting. Having difficulty visualising the filling in, but suspect is probably quite effective.

this is how far I got in Salzburg - or rather mostly on the 6-hour train journey there and back. Now it will sleep a bit because I am UFO-ing this week.

As you see I decided to use the variegated for the filling-in pattern - but will probably use the other two browns for the other motifs... I like it as it is but don't want it to be too reddish...
