Cording?
In the last half hour of work last night I realized that the scales on my dragon is cording and not backstitch. I've never done cording before. Fortunately the chart came with directions. It said to tape one end of the floss to the table, and with the needle in the middle of the length twist and twist. Then untape the end and let the two ends of the string wind together. Then to make sure it stayed twisted to tie it in a knot.. I thought I followed the directions so far ok.. but even with putting a knot my thread unwinds... Could someone be so kind as to hold my hand throught his process and give me some tips ??

I'm sorry I can't help you as I've never produced a cord in my life, but I'll read the replies from more experienced members with great interest!

Re: Cording?
I have tried it a few times, and it did unwind. What I found helpful was if you don't release the ends, but hold them together, and let the needle dangle and twist. Worth a try, anyway.

Re: Cording?
A piece of tape is never strong enough for me - I always had to put the end under something heavy, or get someone to hold it. Twist as tight as you can - the needle should be spinning as you twist. You'll know it's time to stop twisting when the cord starts to form on it's own. If you stop twisting to soon, it will unwind. As Agi said, don't release the ends - just bring them together and the cord forms on it's own.
Oh, and speaking from experience...if you have a cat, make sure you do this somewhere cat free! Spinning needle and colorful thread is a fascinating toy for an exuberant furball...resulting in me running around the living room trying to keep the cord away from the cat, with the cat following close behind and leaping onto whatever she could find to get closer to the thread...entertaining, but not overly productive.

Re: Cording?
The one you would really liked to have seen is the day I took out the bell pull I made for my grandmother to wrap it for Christmas. It is about 2.5 feet long, with a big tassel at the bottom. As I was admiring it, I saw a flash of white fur out the the corner of my eye. I jerked the bellpull up and started spinning in circles and running around the living room, trying to roll it up before she could get it. The cat was flying across tables, couches, shelves, and anything else that got in her way.VERY entertaining, I would have thought -- can I come and watch?
She looks all cute and innocent when she's just sitting there, but I swear she is part flying squirrel...

Re: Cording?
It's "A Mythical Dragon" and is designed by Dimensions. It's one of their charms and charts designs.
Thank you everyone for your advice. I think of I use a smaller needle it might work. I will attempt it soon and let you all know how it works out!

Re: Cording?
I tried cording yesterday....and it worked!! At first I thought it looked weird, but it grew on me once I saw how it helped the dragon to stand out a bit more.

Re: Cording?
Had a look at the big version of your pic -- is it the scales that are the cording? They look so lifelike and 3D, wow!

Re: Cording?
It is the scales that call for the cording, along with the necklaces. It does indeed add to the 3D effect of the pic. I think the cording came out pretty nicely as well. Not bad for my first shot at it at least

Re: Cording?
Sorry, I am coming late to this one.....but I agree with what others have said about keeping hold of the ends and letting the needle dangle.
And I also second the comment about doing this in a cat free zone.....I have 2 cats and the first time I did cording they went nuts! They double-teamed me so that as soon as I got one cat off the thread, the other was jumping at me.....I was just lucky my brother chose that time to come over, so restrained the cats for me!!

PS it looks like you did a great job, the cording makes the dragon really pop from the rest of the design!!
