Storage Tote's

Post by kerbear879 »

Alright..I am going to finally get organized. Right now I keep each of my projects in the plastic bags from the grocery stores but they rip up pretty easy so I am looking to find a storage tote bag that I can store each individual project that I am working on. It needs to be able to close either with a zipper or buttons so my cats can't get into it and needs to be big enough to hold my threads which are in floss a way bags, my fabric, scissors, my qsnap which is 8"x8" and my chart. I want it to be something that is easy to take with me too if I want to travel with it for some reason so nothing terribly huge! And of course, I don't want it to be too expensive since I plan on buying one for each project.

So any ideas? I've been searching the web but haven't come across anything that fits the bill. Would appreciate any feedback!! Thanks!

I'm going to be no help whatsoever. Because my dominant hobby still is quilting whenever I need something like that I just whip something up. It might incorporate some redwork embroidery or with time might even have a cross stitch front.

Not exactly cheap, but I have got a dmc gold concept travel bag, which I think would be just right for you, I have several projects in mine, separated into A4 plastic wallets on the ring binder ring. I don't exactly 'travel' anywhere with it though - it sits beside me on the settee.

The shoulder bag also looks nice, not sure about its size though.

I also have the mini travel bag which is really too small and I don't use it.

I think they are available in navy blue which is a more sensible colour for travelling about with.

They are designed with the stich bows in mind but you can just take out the stitch bow plastic wallet thingy.

Not sure if they have them where you are, but for Queenie (and I plan on getting some more for future WIPs once I start them) I use the canvas shopping bags that you're encouraged to buy in shops instead of using plastic carrier bags. Only thing is they don't zip or button closed, but they're big enough to fit everything in and I can't help thinking that being stored in a cloth bag is better for them than being in plastic.

Have you tried using a laptop bag???

I think this may be an answer to your problem as you can unzip it and there's room in there for everything (The only problem i have is finding one big enough to store all my pending projects *L*)

Hope this helps

This is what I am currently using as well. I had been just keeping everything in a plastic grocery bag- but my bag ripped, so I switched to using a canvas shopping bag. There is no closure, but I just fold the top over and things stay contained- not sure how it does to keep the cats out. I take my projects everywhere.

Or have you thought of one of those plastic accordian files from an office supply store. Those are relatively inexpensive. Most have gussetted sides which should hold a project and all your tools and have an elastic loop closure.

For all my tools and things, I keep them in ziploc bags. For the project I am currently working on, I have two that have sorted thread cards, and one that has all my other tools- scissors, thimble, extra needles, pencil, fabric pens, threader.

My current travel project is in a smaller messenger style bag. I picked it up in the purse/backpack area of a local store. It has one main compartment that zips. My Q-snap is in a ziploc bag (in case the messenger bag gets wet) and my threads, pattern, etc are in a small plastic storage tote. It's easy to have it where I keep my purse so if I'm giong to be sitting around for a while some place, I just pick it up with my purse.

Me too, and in the U.S. the best ones are at Joann's. They're $1 each and HUGE! Most stores' totes are really small but Joann's are regular full-sized tote bags. Everytime I go there I'm tempted to buy another one!

I do this too and all my bit and pieces go in a pencil tin, once I'm done stitching I put it all away in the bag and hang it up on a door or coat hook to keep my toddlers out :)

Thanks everyone for your advice! I've seen those totes in almost every store and never thought to use one to store my cross stitch! Most definitely going to check them out at all the stores now and see which one I like best!

I went to a shop call home and bargins that we have here and they had a leap pad storage bag in there, this has pockets in there everywhere n it was cheap about 2-3pounds i think. It looks like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/LeapFrog-Pink-L ... 659&sr=8-2" target="_blank

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VwziLSTh_M8/S ... eappad.jpg" target="_blank this has alittle better pics of pockets on there. I keep some fabric, threads, the project im doing at the time in a plastic clip wallet and also rubbers n pencils.

Those canvas environmentally freindly bags can be made cat proof..sew on some velcro closure tape or use the stick on one, I did this with mine and kitty no longer can get at things.
