Help for dealing with afghan stitching needed

Post by Granny »

I have an afghan and was not happy with the stitching because it was so loose and hard to follow the holes that I decided to pull out the stitching. I would really like to stitch birds in the blocks. Does anyone have any hints as to how you deal with the flimsy. soft weaves. Starching has come to mind but I'm not sure whether there might not be a better answer.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Granny

I used some iron on interfacing for mine I then cut off the bits that were not stitched over

Hope this helps :D

Kerry--I had given some sort of backing a thought but wasn't happy with what I conjured up. I felt it was going to be too heavy for stitching through plus I wasn't thinking iron on. I have some light weight fusible interfacing so I shall give that a go without having to go shopping first. I was sure someone would have a suggestion so I thank you from the bottom of my heart

You are very welcome Granny :D
I also found that tacking around each square of interfacing helped stop it from lifting while you work.

I can't wait to see your work.

I have done 3 of my 12 designs but I am doing it in rota with other projects.
Good Luck

Interfacing is down on square 1. This afghan has a total of 20 squares so to start with I am thinking of stitching in alternate blocks only. I am making myself a chart for the plan and also for stitch sizing so I don't have to measure or calculate every time I find something that I might be able to use. It will definitely be an alternate project along with several others. Because I will be thinking of each block as a project it could be a long time to finish.
