Stitching on the plane

Post by Ann_ »

I'm going to Europe in march, and i was wondering what I could do on an airplane that wouldn't involve scissors, sewing needles, or anything that isn't permitted on an airplane.

I really want to stitch(it's a 6 hour flight), but I don't know if I would be allowed to bring needles with me.

Do you have any ideas?

My advice:
1) Check the aviation rules website for the country you're flying to before you go.
2) Get folding/rounded tip scissors and even then, only bring scissors that you wouldn't be heartbroken to lose
3) If you do lose the scissors at security, head to a newsstand kiosk inside the security checkpoint and buy a nail clipper. It works in a pinch. :)

I take stitching on every flight and the only time I've had a problem was flying out of a country that didn't allow scissors with a pointed tip. The USA (where I was flying *to*) allows scissors under 2", but this particular country said even those were right out. I had to mail my scissors home and use a nail clipper on the plane to snip thread.

I've never had trouble with needles.

Last I heard, needles were ok but scissors weren't. Shouldn't matter too much though because most places sell thread cutter pendants which are allowed on a plane.

Check the website of the airline you'll be flying by as well - some airlines allow needles and others don't.

For what it's worth, I flew London - Florida (on BA) & back again last autumn and stitched away quite happily using a needle and thread cutter. Neither threw up any issues at Security at either airport. Good luck!

I've stitched loads on planes and my biggest problem has usually been space! I've never had any difficulty with needles, though do check your particular airline's regulations. I believe there are actually plastic needles though you might not be able to do anything on a fine count with them. When I fly, I always remove my scissors from my sewing supplies and pack a nailclipper that I bought just for sewing :) It works perfectly and is easily replaceable if ever lost or forgotten.

I never thought of nail clippers... genius! I brought child scissors with me the last time I flew...but that was back in 2004..

There was another thread on this subject last year when I was flying to Greece for a holiday. I took a thread cutter and a needle without any problem. Any kind of scissors are likely to be confiscated.

I just flew to Hawaii from the mainland and back...happily stitching every bit of the way! Our airport regulations permitted 4" blade scissors and smaller, for good measure I left mine in the unopened box they came in and they went right through with no problem. Just a regular standard $3 pair you can get at Wal-mart.
