Ring thimble
I have trouble with the needle going in the side of my finger when I stitch and after a period of time it can get really sore. I discovered the adjustable ring thimble on sew and so which is a piece of metal that goes around your finger rather than on the end like a normal thimble. The only trouble is I think I am allergic to the thimble (it's only made of cheap metal) and it's made my finger all dried and cracked. Does anyone know of a solution because I just can't stitch without it! Maybe a gold plated one or something?!

Re: Ring thimble
I just did a search for thimble on sewandso's site and they have some rather nice (but not cheap) leather ones.

Re: Ring thimble
I am in the US and at one of the stores, I purchased adhesive "thimbles." Its an oval shaped foam pad that you can position any place on your finger. I too was having difficulty poking my needle into the side of my finger all the time. I have also used small bandaids. Some of the ladies here have said they reacted to the adhesive on the pad.. but if regular bandaids don't cause you problems, these shouldn't either.
Heres the linkto the US store I have seen them at. I would think these are available in the UK somewhere.
I too have seen the leather thimbles and the ones that pinch to fit your finger. Try the clear fingernail polish trick.. I know it works for someone that reacts to the metal on the back of her watch.

i have a necklace that does the same to me. i thought i was sold a fake..but a friend at work wore it and it did not bother her....i too was told about the clear nail polish sort of makes a barrier between the skin and the metal

Re: Ring thimble
Thanks everyone for the helpful ideas. I will firstly try the nail varnish tip and if that fails I will invest in the leather thimble or foam pads.

Re: Ring thimble
The clear nail varnish tip was also suggested to me by an optician when I found out I was allergic to nickel (which my glasses were unfortunately largely made of). You might have to re-apply it from time to time as it wears away but it works pretty well
