Video game project (brother's Christmas gift) - update 10/30

Post by ucladoc »

I'll warn you ahead of time that this project is kind of weird. Lol.

My younger brother (age 25) and I played a lot of video games growing up. I recently got a text message from him saying the following: "Man, I just found a website with pictures of characters from Final Fantasy VI. It really makes me wish I knew how to cross stitch."

Nice, subtle hint. I told him to send me a link to the website and that I could make him some for Christmas. He told me that there were 16 characters he wanted and gave me a list of them in priority.

Here's the cute part. I asked him what he wanted them for --- I offered to put them all on the same piece of fabric and frame it for him. Nope. He was VERY particular about how I am to make these characters (Excuse me? Aren't I the one making them?! ). He wants them to be small, about 2 x 3 inches each, so that he can put them in tiny frames. He loves to play music from Final Fantasy VI and wants the characters on top of his piano. Awww.

Kind of a strange request, but hey, if it makes the kid happy ... I'll do it. :D

Look at HOW SMALL the source images are! It's hilarious! I tried finding bigger images online, but this is as big as they come!

Luckily, the images are pixelated, making them easy to cross-stitch. Here are the first two that I've done.

I told you this was kind of weird. :)

Does he want some from the newer ones too? The ones who are not pixelated?

I love FF as well and I think it's a neat project! :D

:applesauce: very clever and doesn't matter if its "weird" to anyone else as long as your brother is going to be happy with them. what you have done looks like the figures and that's what counts.

Not weird at all! I think it's pretty cool and a great thing to do for your brother. Plus, yours isn't the first video game related project to make an appearance on the forum. :D I think you'll find quite a few people interested in your project.

I'm totally not into video games and have no idea what you're talking about but I think what you're doing for your brother is so sweet!

What a great present for your brother, and it is cute that he wants them to sit on his piano.

I don't think it's a weird request either, everyone likes something different - this coming from a stitcher who spent about 6 months stitching a Predator! Yes, the big scary one with dreadlocks and fangs from the movies!

Love the subtle hinting from your brother - you should have called his bluff and offered to teach him how to cross stitch!!

I think these are brillant - and you have a very lucky brother!! :D

Regarding teaching him how to cross-stitch --- I'm entertaining the idea of also making him a little "kit" for Christmas to sew something small (like a video game character). I'd include the pattern, fabric, and the necessary threads. If he likes stitching, maybe it will be a new hobby for him. If not --- no real money lost on my or his end.

I'm sure there has been and will be far more stranger things that people have/will stitch.
