Newbie from New York

Post by mouselady »

Hello Everyone,

This is the first forum I have ever joined and I am so glad I found it and decided to join! I decided to try cross stitch as a method to relax at the end of the day before going to bed. Of course, I bought a huge kit, and since I didn't know what I was doing the first week was not very relaxing  . But then I found this forum and the Suggestions for Newbies thread, and I have learned so much. Thank goodness one of the posts I read said that the needles that come with kits tend to be lower quality. Last night my needle broke! :? If I hadn't read that post I probably would have decided that cross stitch just wasn't for me, and I would have thrown the whole thing away. Instead, I went to the craft store and bought a pack of new needles. I also got some metallic thread so I can mark my grid (wow, that's gonna help) and masking tape to protect the edges.

I'm thinking I might actually finish, although it will probably by 2015

Really great meeting and getting to learn from all of you,
Desiree

Welcome to the forum, Desiree, and hello from Colorado. I'm glad you found us, and that you have discovered the joy of cross stitching. It is the most relaxing thing for me, good for the soul and the mood.

I hope you'll share pictures of your progress on your WIP. And be prepared to accumulate a lot of stash...there are a lot of enablers here. :-)

Thank you for welcoming me. I am having such a good time reading all of your posts and seeing the projects you are all working on. I've learned so much! And it is so motivating to keep at it and do more and different types of projects. I purchased the Twilight Bridge from Dimensions. It is quite large and rather detailed and a little overwhelming. I don't know what I was thinking when I bought it. But if I do finish it and if it turns out looking halfway decent, I'm sure I will be a cross stitcher for the rest of my life.

I do have a question, what is a stitch along? Even looking at the posts, I'm not sure I'm getting the full picture.

 hi and welcome from New Zealand.

On this forum stitch along has a couple meanings from what I can tell, and more experience people, feel free to correct me -

A) the name of the part of the forum where people post pictures of the projects they are working on. We have our own threads and update it as we 'stitch along' showing the progress we are making.

B) til this forum, I understood to to mean a group of people do the same project and have deadlines to meet throughout the project.

welcome from rural new york--the catskills! where are you?

i am also a novice and good for you for taking on a big project! one stitch at a time has been my best advice. i am just now starting a 12 by 15 inch project after many littler ones. i too find cs-ing relaxing--it is helping me through some tough post-divorce times.

i look so forward to seeing your work!

you will find infinite encouragement and support here! the people on this forum are wonderful!

Some of us create one SAL thread for all our projects and others create a thread for each (I'm in the latter group because it's easier for me to track what I've done). I hope you'll start your own SAL soon.

As for your bigger project, remember it is just one stitch at a time, no matter the finished size. And if you ever get stuck, there is always someone here ready to answer your questions.

 hello and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! Kiwirach and Debby gave good explanations of how we use the term SAL on this forum. I hope you will start a thread of your work and post lots of pictures of your work. Looking forward to getting to know you!

Welcome and Happy New Year from the West of Scotland! Glad you found us, and we'll cheer you on from the sidelines as you stitch your first project. You shouldn't be even mildly surprised when smaller projects call to you from websites and local stores... one big project gets lonely all by itself...

 Funny! I guess I started a SAL on my Facebook page. I have been posting a weekly picture. I can see my progress when I compare the pictures, and my friends are having fun trying to guess the design.

I'm sure if I start a SAL you will all have wonderful constructive criticism and advice.

I think I know the answer to this question, but I'm still going to ask...

I know the top cross of all my cross stitches should be in the same direction. If there are half cross stitches in the project, should the top of the cross match the direction of the half cross stitches? It's a learning process, right?

I'm in Mineola, on Long Island, but I am really more of a city girl. Lived my whole adult life in Brooklyn except for the last 5 years. Really miss it, but it was just to expensive in Brooklyn to buy a house and we got tired of living in an apartment.

The catskills are beautiful. We take a drive every now and then and go hiking.
