gridding?

Post by nannyrainbow »

How much do you grid at a time?

I found my UFOs - Elegance of the Orient I had gridded most of the Aida & done a small amount of stitching.

Periwinkle Cottage I had organised threads, sorted chart & done 2 lines of basting stitches to show middle of fabric (across & down). I did a few more lines of gridding last night & decided to do a certain amount of gridding at a time on this, doing more as I go on. Have done from the centre few lines down & am doing few lines across before I start x st.

Looked on Scarlet Quince tutorial pages for gridding & they showed diagrams with the for & against of each way of gridding, also looked in 2 of my x st books & they various options of how to do it. I think Richard does his with fishing line & does a little bit of gridding at a time.

In the past I have always sat & done gridding over whole of Aida but now I am on larger projects thought I would ask to see what others do.

Now grands are growing up & going to more things I should have more free time so hope to be on here regularly again :D

BTW.... on Anchor instruction leaflet it said to iron fabric & smooth out any creases before starting to stitch. I think it was quite recently queried on here - I seem to recall someone, think it was Wendy, who said they had sometimes ironed fabric prior to stitching to get creases out.

Also found out I've been dong three quarter stitches the 'wrong' way. When I did the bar of the stitch I never held it in place with small stitch lying over it. I had smallest lying next to the larger one. Oh dear, never mind - no one noticed & my finished projects looked OK - I will do them the correct way in future as I don't want a slapped wrist

I part grid big pictures & do middle lines in a different colour than rest of gridding.

Started gridding Periwinkle Cottage last night. Sorted threads this afternoon. Am going to stitch top right first :D

That is good news, Del! :D
I am new to gridding but found that it is so helpful.
On evenweave, I spend some time gridding the whole fabric with Sulky Thread ( thread that you cannot pierce)
With my latest Aida, I also gridded the whole project but with a water soluble pen.

I always iron my fabric before doing anything with it as some creases are stubborn.

I always do as you do! I never heard of holding it in place with a small stitch... :thinks:

On my large projects (like HAEDs) I usually grid a page + a few columns extra and a few rows extra at a time. I use the soluble ink and that seems to work well. Also I don't find the grinding as tedious as it would be if I were to grid the whole project at one time. Smaller projects I tend to not grid. I'm not sure why.

I don't iron my fabric before I stitch and when I do have 3/4 stitches, which I don't very often, I pretty much stitch them as you and poppy do.

Thank you Helene :D

Lovely to see young ones growing up but by the same token DH & I are getting older & less agile. Thankfully our health issues are not life threatening like many people have. Have been busy knitting as local groups wanted items for charities.

Now sorted kits after seeing the wonderful updates on here. Put threads on card for cottage while football has been on so that is done, also a few more gridding lines so I can start stitching now.

Given myself extra motivation by ordering Design Works Cat on a Quilt. Special price - reduced by 52% on Amazon - only 1 left so bought before anyone else did. Lovely cat with green eyes but, I must not start that until cottage well on its way.

You're right in that I grid about a page at a time with red fishing line. The projects I'm doing at the moment seem to take such a long time that any more than a page seems like a waste of time, and I want to get on and stitch, not grid!

Regards

Richard.
